Dot MOBI Domains
More and more people use mobile devices to access the Internet, so the need for mobile-friendly websites is steadily increasing. To fulfill this demand, the entity that administers the universal top-level domains, ICANN, introduced the .MOBI domain name extension in 2005. The first registrations were enabled in September 2006, and the concept behind this domain extension is that all websites that use it must comply with specific restrictions. In other words, all .MOBI websites are required to be created to be opened correctly by mobile devices in agreement with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” created by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in cooperation with the dot MOBI Registry organization. These involve how a page is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), and so on.
The rules have provoked some worries given that the generic TLD is the only one that specifies what devices ought to be able to open a website and the way in which this needs to happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a web page should be designed in such a way as to be opened by most web browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
As the .MOBI Registry organization does not offer domains directly, you can buy a .MOBI domain with any third-party provider, such as ours. If you have an already registered domain, you can also move it over to our company if you get its EPP transfer authorization key from your current registrar company. If you do that, you’ll be able to handle your domain(s) and hosting account from a single place – our Hepsia Control Panel interface.
